Creating Your Customised Strategic Growth Plan

According to Harvard Business School (HBS):

” Strategic Planning is the ongoing organisational process of using available knowledge to document a business’s intended direction”

These days, your business exists in an incredibly dynamic and ever-changing environment with technology, competition and uncertainty being key factors. Competitive forces, including market concentration, competition intensity, barriers to entry, threat of substitutes, buyer power and supplier power all play an important role in shaping a company’s approach to strategy. If your business does not evolve to meet changing demands, you will be in danger of losing your competitive advantages. Running and growing your business in this environment isn’t easy.

Strategic planning is a speciality of mine. During my corporate career, as CEO and CFO in companies of all sizes, including 3 top fifty ASX listed companies, I was actively involved in creating implementing and ongoing review of annual strategic plans.

Succesful Business Owners and CEO’s also create a detailed “Strategic Growth Plan” that provides a timeline for their business for the next two or three years-no more. In these uncertain times, projecting your detailed business plan any further may be unrealistic.

However, In some companies, the Owners or CEOs with a significant shareholding may want to create a strategic growth plan for more than 3 years  e.g if they are planning to retire in 6 years from now, with a specific minimum payout in mind.

Your strategic growth plan should clearly document how your revenue and profits must grow to achieve the targets and objectives you set in your plan. Your success will depend on maintaining your focus on your big picture objectives and desires. Every business and every industry have unique characteristics, so there is no “One-size-fits-all” strategic growth plan.

Your “strategic growth plan” should be customised for your business, products or services, location, industry, geographic location, target locations, competition, market size etc.

You will still need to thoroughly research all options, to make sure you are clear on the positives, negatives, risks & rewards of each option. We will work with you through that process.

Your Strategic growth plan is much more than a pitch for financing, it’s your roadmap from which you will manage and operate your business and refer to for direction in times of doubt. It should clearly lay out the milestones that are most important to the ongoing success of your business.

Strategic planning is a systematic process that helps you set an ambition for your business’s future and how best to achieve it. Its primary purpose is to connect three key areas:

  • your mission – defining your business’ purpose
  • your vision – describing what you want to achieve
  • your strategic plan – outlining how you intend to achieve your ultimate goals.

The strategic planning process allows you to ask and answer four fundamental questions about your business. The answers to these questions will make up the bulk of your Strategic Plan document:

1. Where are you now?

2. Where do you want to take your business?

3. How will you get there? 

4. How will you know if you’re succeeding? 

Determine the checkpoints and decide how you will measure success.

Identifying options available and selecting your most attractive options.

So, based on a growth strategy of constantly adding value for your existing customers, and attracting your ideal new customers, there are numerous ways to grow your business, including:

• Creating new products or services your customers need or would benefit from.
• Developing a product and pricing strategy to maximise sustainable profits.
• Increasing your lead closure rate to increase revenue and profit.
• Building strong ongoing relationships with existing customers.
• Investing in marketing to increase brand awareness and attract potential new customers.
• Widening your geographic areas of activity, and Leadership,

You need to be prepared, so start by thinking about your growth strategy, all the options listed above, and more, whilst at the same time, your CFO should be making sure that you’re optimising your gross margins and ongoing sales & administrative expenses.

The combination of all these factors must be optimised to ensure that you achieve or exceed your target Earnings Before Interest, depreciation and Tax (EBITDA) in your growth plan.
