Introduction
When I started my online life after leaving my corporate career of 30 years in late 2012, one of the first things I was taught in seminars run by “guru’s” was that I must have a website.
And in those days, building a website was not as simple as it is today, and to get someone else to do it for you cost upwards of $5,000.
After talking to numerous “experts” and much procrastination, I decided to learn how to do it for myself.
What I had learnt however, was that the biggest task is not building the website, it’s creating the content, and how to structure of your content to make it easy to access and use. The only person who can do that is you!
I dabbled in Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) but didn’t take it as seriously as I should have, or do now.
(In hindsight, I wasted about a lot of time and money doing it myself, but I must admit, the knowledge I gained is still useful today).
I wish I’d had tools like the Hubspot SEO Article and Free SEO tools below.

So What is SEO?
At its core, SEO focuses on nothing else but expanding a company’s visibility in the organic search results
i.e. getting seen on page 1 of a Google search for a keyword that people interested in your niche might type into their search engine.
It helps businesses rank more pages higher in Search Engine Result Pages, and as a result attract more visitors to their website, increasing the chances for more conversions.
In a nutshell SEO is a strategy to ensure that when someone Googles your product or service category, they find your website.
Think about it….
What is the first thing you do when you need to know anything about anything?
90% of people would turn to Google or their favourite search engine.
And according to Hubspot “89% of B2B buyers and 81% of online shoppers do the same thing!
Faced with a problem, challenge or even a choice, they Google it. Simple!
So, it’s a cold, harsh truth that without at least some presence in Google or another top search engine, your business is unlikely to flourish.
In the free guide, you’ll discover a strategy to build your presence – Search Engine Optimization (SEO.)
You’ll learn how SEO works, and what you must do to position your site in search engine results.
To be honest, too many online marketers and experts make SEO seem complex and scare off newbies with their industry jargon; and rarely explain anything beyond theory.
This Hubspot guide doesn’t do that.
Conclusion
To get traffic to your website, and therefore sell your products or get them to join your opportunity, from your website, SEO is compulsory.

Starting from scratch?
Here are some tips that will save you time and money:
By light years, whatever anyone else tells you, the best platform to build your website on is WorPress.com The statistics speak for themselves:
Market share trends for content management systems for websites
2017 1 Sep | 2018 1 Mar | |
WordPress | 59.4% | 60.2% |
Joomla | 6.8% | 6.3% |
Drupal | 4.7% | 4.4% |
Squarespace | 1.4% | 1.7% |
Sourced by a Google search
As a result of their domination there are far more plugins and resources available for WordPress than for the other platforms
The platform is also functionally rich and relatively easy to use.
Your website will require a template i.e. a pre-designed look and feel, and something that best fits the industry you are in (e.g. An internet marketer’s website would look different from a website for an online shop selling clothes)
I suggest you look at StudioPress themes. There are some Free Themes, but I suggest in investing in one that best suits your business and has the features you want-and will cost less than $100
Look here: https://my.studiopress.com/themes/
PS This website is built on their Enterprise Pro Theme
To Manage Your SEO
The two best plugins (in my experience) to manage your online SEO are :
“Yoast” : https://yoast.com/ or
“All in One SEO Pack”
Both have Free versions you can download the “Plug-ins” (equivalent to Apps on your Smartphone) directly from your WordPress Website
OK finally 🙂
